The Whitney Museum first exhibited Kusama's work in the Whitney's 2004 Biennial and then again in Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era, an exhibition organized by the Tate Museum, in 2005-06. The Whitney owns three of Kusama's works, including Fireflies on the Water, 2002.
